The Memorial

Helping Hands, Refuse2Lose

Friday August 21st 2015

If you are lucky in your life,   you will get a chance to meet Kim & Paul Carswell, and Dev & Steve Jude. These two amazing families have seen more tragedy than any family should have to ever endure. Both families lost a young child to cancer. Many of us would never have gotten past the tragedy.  Not these families, they took adversity beyond belief and turned it into a positive and “Paid it Forward” Both of these families ran very successful fundraising golf tournaments at the Canadian for many years, with proceeds going to Candlelighters.  Now the time has come for both families to step back and reflect.

As a result Gail and I are inviting you to join us for this new amazing event, The  Memorial. Simply it is a tribute to the Carswell family and Jude family and to Celebrate the life of Tori Carswell and Bryce Jude.  We plan to make this an annual event and it will continue to support Canadlelighters with proceeds going to Tori’s helping hand, and Refuse 2 Lose campaigns.

Please join us, Sincerely Mark & Gail Seabrook

This is how the Journey began

Tori’s Helping Hand is named after Tori Carswell who was the daughter of Kim and Paul Carswell.  Tori died of a childhood cancer called neuroblastoma in January 2004. The Carswells were very fortunate to have funds raised by friends, family and the community of Stittsville which enabled them to give Tori some special moments.  This inspired the Carswells to set up Tori’s Helping Hand so that families of other palliative care oncology children could do the same.  Tori’s Helping Hand was established in 2005, and is part of the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Support Programs Inc. This program provides funds to palliative care oncology children and their families, as well as to families whose children require a transplant. The money for palliative children will help the families provide much needed comfort in their children’s last days. This comfort might come in the way of a comfortable chair, a spa visit, a puppy, etc.

Kim and Paul are pleased to be teaming up with The Canadian Golf and Country Club and Refuse2Lose to continue to raise money for Candlelighters in order to provide financial assistance and a much needed escape for the children and their families.

Refuse2Lose Team Bryce was originally formed in 2009 by an amazing group of friends and family to provide financial and emotional support to Bryce and the entire Jude family of 5 following his diagnosis of a rare form of leukemia at only age 4. His family and friends now want to try and pay forward the generosity they received, while at the same time honoring their son, Bryce.  Refuse2Lose Team Bryce

(www.refuse2lose.ca) is part of Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Support Programs Inc. and annually funds the Candlelighters Suite Seats program which is a private suite at the Canadian Tire Centre for children (and their parents) to forget the everyday realities of fighting cancer and just have some fun watching a hockey game or attending a concert. It’s a chance to create some life long memories, “helping  kids fighting cancer get out of the hospital and into the game”. All this is done in loving memory of Bryce Jude, who passed away in September 2012 after a 3 year battle and who  fought long and hard, always with a mini hockey stick in his hand and wearing his beloved Ottawa Senators jersey. Second only to his obsession for hockey was Bryce’s love, ability and passion for golf so it is a privilege for Refuse2Lose Team Bryce to be partnered with Tori’s Helping Hand and the Canadian Golf and Country Golf to honour two amazing children, Tori and Bryce, while raising much needed funds to support the many Ottawa families affected by childhood cancer.
