“Our most vulnerable patients are tiny, some of them weighing only 500 grams – slightly more than a pound of butter. These are our region’s premature babies, born 30 weeks, or more than three month too early. For these little babies to grow and develop they need conditions that mimic the mother’s womb: warmth, oxygen, food and quiet. We attempt to recreate these conditions by artificial means. An incubator simulates warmth, a ventilator helps the baby breath, and intravenous solutions help the baby grow. These babies also need human touch, and the parent’s presence is key to their thriving and surviving”
With limited spacing to care for these babies, the Ottawa Hospital Foundation is required to raise $5 million to renovate the NICU. The $5M will be used to expanding the NICU to give each baby a separate room which will minimize the risk of infection, allow staff to adjust stimuli (such as lighting, temperature, etc.) so that babies can sleep and develop in an undisturbed environment and provide more privacy to parents and caregivers. The funds raised will also go towards purchasing state-of-the-art technology thus giving these premature babies the best chance at growing up to live the life they deserve.
Join us on Friday May 11th (Sunday is Mothers Day) as we celebrate the strong women in our lives and raise much needed funds for these little babies.
